From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Prayers
Please keep the following members of our community in your prayers as they face the illness of a loved one; freshman Chris Cartier, and alumni Paul Chartier, whose grandfather Earl Chartier, has been diagnosed with lung cancer; freshman Elizabet Hernández, whose grandfather, Cayo Hernández, is very ill; staff member Lillian Sunday, whose son Jimmy Richardson, is recuperating from a lung blockage; and 8th grader Maya Thomas, whose grandfather had colon cancer surgery.

Please keep in your prayers these students who are going through the difficulty of losing a family member: senior Ashley Duarte, whose grandmother, Nora Porras, passed away; administrator Tina Garcea, whose brother, Michael, passed away; junior Chad Forshee, and freshman Colby Forshee, whose grandfather, Jack Logan, passed away; senior Victoria Hurtado, whose grandmother passed away; freshman Cameron Kinney, whose 17 year old cousin, Christian Matthew Vega, passed away; sophomore Judson Meshack IV and seventh-grader Jaughn Meshack, whose grandmother, Dorthy Meshack, passed away: freshmen Michael Ricard, whose greatgrandmother, Tiburcia Garcia, passed away; sophomore Anthony Schell, whose grandfather Richard Schell, passed away; and freshman Chase Shield, whose great-grandmother Ethel Brister, passed away.

Welcome!
Congratulations to junior Matthew Montemayor, and his parents María and Juan Montemayor, on the birth of his sister Sophia.

Bishop Dunne 100 Dinner
Bishop Dunne 100 Dinner Supports Students in Need
Bishop Dunne Catholic School’s 100 Dinner on Tuesday, November 6, 2007, supported our extensive tuition assistance program. The seventh annual event, sponsored by Friends of Bishop Dunne Catholic School, was a glittering event at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. The dinner is pivotal in enabling us to provide increased educational opportunities for many deserving students. Bishop Dunne has awarded nearly $750,000 in tuition assistance to students in the 2007-2008 school year.

Bishop Kevin J. Farrell, D.D., the new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Dallas, delivered the keynote address and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Orender served as Honorary Chairs. Mr. Lee Posey, founder of Palm Harbor Homes and the Foundation for the Education of Young Women, received the Bishop Dunne Voyager Award for outstanding involvement in promoting educational opportunities for at-risk students throughout the Dallas community and the entire United States. Ms. Adarely Trejo gave a moving speech on what Catholic education meant for her, as she returns to the school where she was valedictorian after earning a bachelor degree and master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame.

Dinner co-chairs were Mr. Lou Munin, Mr. Ken Reiser, and Mr. Oliver McGonigle.

Conferences with Teachers During the Quarter
Open communication with parents about their student’s academic progress is among our top priorities, and teachers work hard to keep parents informed. E-mail is the best way to alert a teacher to an immediate concern, and if indicated, and given enough notice, teachers can rearrange their schedule to promptly accommodate that parent.

Please be aware, however, that before and after school most teachers are tutoring or monitoring students while they make up quizzes and tests and therefore cannot leave what they are doing to meet with parents who drop in for a conference without an appointment. As always, please feel free to check with Mrs. Dailey for progress and performance reviews and to set up appointments with teachers as needed.

First Quarter Honor Rolls
Congratulations to all our students who have earned Honor Roll – we are very proud of their achievements!

2008-2009 ISEE Entrance Test Information
The time is drawing near for Bishop Dunne’s entrance exam for the 2008-2009 school year. This year Bishop Dunne will again join dozens of other schools in the Dallas/ Fort Worth metroplex in using the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE for short) as our official entrance examination. Prospective students must register for the ISEE test online at http://www.ISEETest.org . One of the many benefits of the ISEE exam is that students may take the test at one location and have their results sent electronically to multiple schools.

All students planning on taking the ISEE exam, at any location (including those who will taking the exam at Bishop Dunne), must register with ISEE online approximately one month in advance of the desired testing date. The fee for testing for 2008-2009 is $78 and is separate from the $75 Bishop Dunne application fee. The testing fee is payable directly to ISEE online.

Bishop Dunne will host the exam on December 8th, 2007, January 12th, 2008 and January 26th, 2008. Registration is available online and closes approximately one month prior to each testing date. Late registration (with a penalty fee) is available online up until one week prior to each exam date. Very limited walk-up onsite registration is available on a space available basis. Students are highly encouraged to pre-register with ISEE online in order to avoid the $30 walk-up penalty fee.

As a reminder, Bishop Dunne will accept priority admission applications for the 2008-2009 school year through January 15, 2008. Students may submit test scores after we have received their applications. Please do not hesitate to call Mr. Rich Mullin at 214 339 6561 or email him at rmullin@bdhs.org if you have any questions.

Ecology Club Cleanup
Ecology Club Presidents Hannah Cook and Hannah Wangler, and club moderator Mr. Daniel Wilson, wish to thank the following club members with their help on the Coombs Creek Clean-Up Project in Kessler Park in Oakcliff: Leslie Boorhem-Stephenson (‘09), Michael Cruz (‘10), Elizabeth Hernandez (‘11), Arturo Herrera (‘09), Brent Luckey (‘09), Andrew McDaniel (‘09), Jessica Porter (‘09), Jenny Suter (‘09). These students braved the rain, poison ivy, and a very smelly creek to help clean up an area of Kessler Park in Oak Cliff. Thank you for all your help with this project. Next month’s service project, an Ecology Club t-shirt fundraiser, will be run by Hannah Cook and Hannah Wangler. Please don’t forget to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Drumline News
On Sunday, October 14, the Bishop Dunne Drumline performed for Ursuline Academy’s Annual Powder Puff Girls’ Football Game, a game between the senior and junior classes. Bishop Dunne was selected to represent the junior class, while Jesuit’s Drumline was selected to represent the seniors. The Bishop Dunne Drumline treated the crowd to a stunning Halftime show, and received many compliments from Ursuline students and parents. It was an exciting, fun night for Ursuline, Jesuit, and Bishop Dunne, and we thank the Drumline, their parents, and Band Directors Mr. Bill Rhyan and Mr. Glenn Robertson, for representing their school on a Sunday afternoon.

The varsity team is led by seniors Jordan Cooksy, Noel Dasari, Sam Driscoll, Adam Elchlepp, Nick Holley, Ernesto Slater, Brandon West, and Devyn Young; juniors Brandon Brown, Danny Elliot, Trei Sanders, Shane Smith, Jonathan Thomas; and sophomores Antoine Anderson and Dominique Harris.

Please come and support the girls’ last performance during Senior Night, on Friday, November 9, 2007.

Middle School Football
The Bishop Dunne 7th and 8th grade footballers have won the Eastern Division championship of the Dallas Parochial League. With a 24-6 win over St. Pius X on October 28, the team went into a three-way tie with St. Patrick and St. Thomas Aquinas, with each team having identical 4-1 division records, and Bishop Dunne gained the championship as a result of a series of tie breakers. The Falcons finished the regular season with a 7-1 record overall, the only blemish coming at the hands of the St. Thomas Wildcats in a disappointing 12-8 loss. Bishop Dunne’s first playoff opponent will be the winner of the quarter final match between St. Thomas and St. Rita, and this semi-final game will be played at our home field on Sunday, November 11. The winner of that game will proceed to the DPL Catholic Bowl at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2007.

Middle School Basketball
It is time to start signing up for basketball. If students are interested, please contact Coach Guerrero at sguerrero@bdhs.org. It is mandatory that all players wishing to play basketball this year attend the pre – season skills practices. Players are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions. Only coaches and players are allowed at the pre –season skills evaluations. Girls’ evaluations are on November 3, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and November 7, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Boys’ evaluations are on November 5, 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., November 8, 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., and November 9, 3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The middle school basketball philosophy is as follows: the goals listed below will be accomplished based on the number of athletes from each grade level wanting to play basketball. All students with a desire to play and improve their skills will be placed on a team. Each student will be placed on the team that will give him or her the most competitive playing time. Teams will be based on an equal separation of position players (guards, forwards, centers). Students will be placed on a team appropriate to their grade level. The Bishop Dunne Basketball program will strive to field a Division I team.

High School Cross Country
Congratulations to the High School Cross Country team for its performances in the month of October. Swimming
The Bishop Dunne Swim team has begun its season and we are very pleased to see the enormous growth that has taken place with this team. Pool practices will be held at Christ For The Nations Pool at 444 Fawn Ridge, in Dallas. Dry workouts will be held on campus, meeting in room 402. All practices are scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will also be some elective times available for extra stroke instruction, weight training and conditioning if desired.

Coaches Melody Hopkins and Robbie Zeske are building a strong, deep team for the future of Bishop Dunne, with middle school swimmers rivaling our high school swimmers in attendance. Bishop Dunne extends our sincere thanks to the Christ For The Nations organization for allowing us to use their pool. If you are interested in more information about swimming for Bishop Dunne, email Coach Zeske at rzeske@bdhs.org.

Volleyball
Coach Kistner would like to thank everyone for their support of the Volleyball program this season. Although our record did not reflect our efforts, we are very proud of what the girls accomplished this season. Our Varsity team succeeded in placing five people on the alldistrict team, two as second team and three as honorable mention. Our JV team succeeded in defending our Maypearl Tournament title, and the freshmen took second in Maypearl as well.

Our middle school program improved by leaps and bounds. We fielded five teams, and placed two teams in the playoffs. This is a dramatic improvement over last season. Our future looks very bright once these girls enter the high school program.

Coach Kistner would also like to thank all of our parents, especially those who volunteered to coach in the middle school, those who helped with the high school girls, and all the parents who came out and supported the teams at the games.

Many of the girls have started trying out for various club teams, and all of the girls are encouraged to participate. Conditioning workouts begin in January and open gym will start after basketball season.

We thank Coach Michael Kistner, Coach Wanda Boesch, Coach Lauren Bugos, Coach John Carlough, Coach John Hall, Coach Kelly Pineda, and Coach Kelly Trojan for all their help and their constant support of the girls and the volleyball program.

Tuition Refunds

Any unpaid fees or fines will be deducted from the refund. Additionally, there will be an administrative fee assessed to all such refunds resulting from voluntary withdrawal from the school.

Tuition Assistance Thank You to Sisters of St. Mary of Namur
The faculty and staff would like to thank the many sponsors who contribute to the Bishop Dunne tuition assistance program. The school has currently awarded over $737,000 in tuition assistance to 255 students. In order to distribute such a large amount of aid, the school pursues grants, solicits donations, and holds fundraising activities. It is through the generosity of many that the school is able to meet its tuition assistance goals.

Many families do not realize that every Bishop Dunne student receives financial aid. This is because the amount of tuition charged per student does not actually cover the cost of educating that student. Bishop Dunne works very hard to forge relationships with groups, as well as individuals, that believe, as we do, that every student is entitled to a Catholic education. It is through the generosity of many that Bishop Dunne is able to grant assistance to so many of its students.

It is with sincere appreciation that the faculty and staff expresses its gratitude to the Sisters of Saint Mary of Namur who have helped to give the school life and who have supported Bishop Dunne for several years in so many ways, including contributions to the school’s tuition assistance program. The Sisters donate $15,000 annually to help Bishop Dunne students with a financial need who have proven to be hardworking students with acceptable behavior whose families actively support their church and school.
