Parent/Teacher
Conferences on April 11
On Friday, April 11, 2008, Bishop Dunne will be holding parent/
teacher conferences. Bishop Dunne is presently using a Web based
appointment calendar that requires parents and teachers to register
at the following Web address and use the calendar feature there
to make and track appointments for the day. If you have not yet
registered for the calendar this year, we invite you to do so now.
A valid
e-mail address is necessary before you can use this service. Each
posting generates an e-mail message to the e-mail account you specified
when signing up as a user of the calendar service. If you enter
an invalid e-mail address when signing up for the service, you
will not receive notification of your account activation, or any
of the appointments you post on the calendar. More information
and explicit instructions and help features can be found on the
site. It is our impression that this service cuts down on wait
times and helps streamline the process. You will find the calendar
feature at the following URL: http://www.bdhs.org/parents/framecal/
parentteacher.html.
Certain teachers will not be at school for the
conferences because of field trips. They are: Mr. Mike Alfers,
Ms. Erica Barnett, Ms. Katy Bove, Mrs. Kate Dailey, Mr. Nick Hurt,
Ms. Amber Jenkins, Ms. Elizabeth Kearney, and Mr. Frank McEachern.
Please feel free to contact these teachers for appointments at
other mutually convenient times.

GIS program. Congratulations to Mr. Brad Baker, Mr. Wood, and our
GIS students!
Golf Tournament
The 5th annual Bishop Dunne Golf Tournament will be held on Monday,

Oak Cliff Country Club. Honorary Chair this year is Patrick Crayton,
#84, Dallas Cowboy Wide Receiver. Registration time is at 11:30
a.m. and tee off is at 12:30 p.m. Raffle and silent auction items
this year include front rows seats to a Kenny Chesney concert
and autographed book from Shaquille O’Neil. Prizes will
be given for the top three teams, longest drive, closest to the
pin and hole-in-one. Proceeds will benefit the equipment for
the new athletic field house.
Congratulations
to Dr. Alonzo!
On February 27, 2008, Dr. Veronica Alonzo Ed.D. completed her requirements
for a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. The title of her dissertation
is Predicting Latino Males’ Persistence in High School: A
Model Combining Social and Academic Risk Factors. This is a quantitative
correlational study that examined societal and academic factors
in relation to student persistence in Latino male students. Results
showed a significant correlation between persistence and the following
factors: household income, mother’s education level, number
of absences, and GPA. Since these factors seem to predetermine
the student’s persistence, results suggest that schools could
use such markers to determine which students are at risk of dropping
out. Special dropout prevention programs could be implemented to
improve student persistence among at-risk students.
The full dissertation will be available this summer
on ProQuest’s dissertation database.
Help
Booklet
At the suggestion of a couple of parents, we have compiled a webpage “help” section
for parents with frequently asked questions about procedures. Tips
and hints on buying books, admissions, EdLine, transportation,
and uniforms will be found on our website, and a booklet is available
at the front desk. We would appreciate parents’ feedback
on refining any sections that need clarification or adding any
questions that we had not foreseen. Please send comments to Ms.
Celeste Arista at carista@bdhs.org.
Become
Famous with TalonTube
Bishop Dunne announces TalonTube! Students are asked to provide
video highlights of school events, athletic performances, and band
performances which can then be featured on the website. Teachers
will also have the opportunity to post creative work on the site.
If anyone wishes to submit activities and videos that will be considered
for the School Website, these need to be submitted in the following
file formats: full DV, .mov, or .avi., because most other formats
may have been compressed using inhospitable codecs. It is also
difficult to verify genuine ownership when someone has video in
an un-editable format. Those submitting the videos should also
understand that a video in DVD format is not acceptable. Any submission
not in one of the specified formats will not be considered. All
videos will be reviewed by Mr. Beattie and Mr. Wood. All submissions
become the property of Bishop Dunne.
Construction
Update - March 2008
The month of March saw a lot of activity on the construction
site. The storm water piping for the field house and football field
was finished and we passed our inspections for both. The gym plaza
sidewalk area was paved and the crew started forming and placing
grade beams for the field house.
The football field and track has been completely
demolished and the whole area regraded. It was found that the football
field actually went uphill on the southern end. The demolition
was made more difficult by the discovery of bedrock only 8 inches
below the surface.
In the month of April, the under slab utilities
for the field house will be placed in position and the grade beams
will be completed soon. The field house slab will be poured after
that and then the masonry block work will begin. The track area
is being graded and drainage installed. The new track should be
installed by the end of April.
Photographs of our progress can be found on our
website, www. bdhs.org.

Bishop
Dunne Academy - 6th Grade
Bishop Dunne Catholic School is pleased to announce the addition
of a sixth grade for the school year 2008-2009 to its middle school
in order to meet the needs of the surrounding community. The Bishop
Dunne Academy offers 6th through 8th grade students an accelerated
curriculum combined with an integrated technology approach, preparing
students to excel in a college preparatory environment. Students
are placed in a safe and nurturing environment which allows for
individual student guidance and support. Individualized education
plans allow for reinforcement, enrichment and advancement with
the opportunity for high school credit. For more information on
applications, please email Mr. Rich Mullin, Director of Admission,
at rmullin@bdhs.org.
The Academy Director is Mrs. Sherry Nelson, who
has previous experience as Coordinator of Education at St. Joseph
Catholic School in Shreveport and as Principal of St. Augustine
Catholic School for the Diocese of Dallas. During the past two
years, Mrs. Nelson has worked with the Associate Director of Catholic
Schools on literacy education in the Diocese and will bring that
expertise to Dunne students as well as her experience as an administrator.
The new lead 6th grade teacher is Mr. Jeremy Ratliff, who has extensive
teaching experience in middle school science, math, and language
arts. Mr. Ratliff is a nationally renowned educator, especially
with his expertise in technology education and podcasts in the
classroom. As an administrator, he has developed curriculum and
supervised specialized learning. Mr. Ratliff speaks Spanish fluently.
GeoTech
Lecture Series
Bishop Dunne is pleased to announce the 2008-2009 GeoTech Lecture
Series which brings outstanding and prominent business people and
activists in their field to the students in order for them to learn
about current events, social justice issues, and new ideas and
ideologies, both at home and abroad. “A consistent theme
of Catholic social teaching is the option or love of preference
for the poor. Today, this preference has to be expressed in worldwide
dimensions, embracing the immense numbers of the hungry, the needy,
the homeless, those without medical care, and those without hope.” Solicitudo
Rei Socialis (On Social Concern), Pope John Paul II, 1987.
We believe that it is imperative for our students
to understand and connect with global communities and help resolve
situations that endanger our environment, well-being and common
humanity. Previous speakers include Sister Helen PreJean, Colman
McCarthy, and Dr. Spencer Wells. This year, we aim to bring a thought
provoking speaker to our students every six weeks.
Our first speakers of the 2008-2009 GeoTech Lecture
Series are District Attorney Craig Watkins and Immaculee Ilibagiza.
Other speakers booked for future months are Mayor Tom Leppert,
Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique’s Journey and Dr. Denise
Baskind, a physician who has been working at the Rwanda Mountain
Gorilla Veterinary Project.
The
Honorable Craig Watkins, Dallas County District Attorney
Mr. Watkins will speak at Bishop Dunne at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
April 16, 2008, in the auditorium. Our guest will speak about his
work in Dallas with the Innocence Project of Texas. Students and
parents are invited to attend and the evening is free of charge.
Middle school students must attend with an adult.
Craig Watkins, a Dallas native, was inaugurated
on January 1, 2007, as the Criminal District Attorney (DA) for
Dallas County, Texas. He is the first African-American elected
to that position in Texas. As DA for Dallas County, his SMART ON
CRIME philosophy engages innovative strategies throughout the prosecutorial
process and seeks to address the root causes of why offenders commit
crime. DA Watkins’ interest in conviction integrity led to
partnering with the Innocence Project of Texas to aid the wrongfully
convicted.
District Attorney Watkins received a Bachelor
of Arts degree in political science from Prairie View A&M University
and a Jurist Doctorate degree from Texas Wesleyan University School
of Law. Mr. Watkins has received numerous honors and awards for
his outstanding accomplishments in the community from an array
of organizations and groups: Texas Lawyer’s IMPACT LAWYER
OF THE YEAR 2007; 2007 NAACP Texas Hero Award; Dallas Urban League
Torch Award 2006; and he was named as one of Eclipse Magazine’s “Super
Lawyers” January 2007.
District Attorney Watkins was featured in the
March 5, 2007, issue of JET; the May 2007 issue of Ebony Magazine
as one of the next generation of African-American leaders; and
the September 2007 issue of Texas Monthly.
District Attorney Watkins’ innovative strategies
as the new D.A. in Dallas County have garnered him local, national
and international attention from CNN, ABC’s Good Morning
America, German TV, Dallas Morning News, New York Times, Washington
Post, L. A. Times and Chicago Tribune.
Immaculee
Ilibagiza
Rwandan native Immaculee Ilibagiza, will be appearing on April
30, 2008, at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, at 6911 Lemmon Avenue.
Bishop Dunne has secured tickets and will offer them to our students
and parents at a discounted price of $15 each. Immaculee’s
appearance is sponsored by Lumen Institute, Women for the Third
Millennium, and Regnum Christi. Please email Ms. Celeste Arista
at carista@bdhs.org for more information or to secure tickets.
Immaculee’s speaking engagements and book sales benefit a
charitable fund organized through the United Nations, Left to Tell
Charitable Fund, which helps orphaned children in Africa. Students
must arrange their own transportation and middle school students
must attend with their parents.
In 1994, Immaculee was a 22-year-old college
student with a bright future in electrical engineering. While visiting
her parents for Easter that year, the assassination of Rwandan’s
Hutu president sparked a three-month killing spree that would shock
the world and claim the lives of nearly a million ethnic Tutsis,
including Immaculee’s parents and two brothers. She survived
the holocaust by hiding in a Hutu pastor’s tiny bathroom
with seven other terrified women for 91 unforgettable days. Immaculee’s
remarkable story of survival is only the beginning of an inspiring
journey through faith to an impossible end—to seek out and
forgive even her family’s killers. She chronicles her experience
in Left To Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust,
published in 2006.
“I was born in paradise,” writes Ilibagiza,
whose story begins with a loving tribute to her beloved homeland. “Rwanda
is a tiny country set like a jewel in central Africa,” she
continues. “She is so breathtakingly beautiful that it’s
impossible not to see the hand of God in her lush, rolling hills,
mist-shrouded mountains, green valleys and sparkling lakes.” Immaculee
is regarded as one of world’s leading speakers on peace,
faith, and forgiveness. She has shared her universal message with
world dignitaries, school children, multinational corporations,
churches, and at many conferences. Her story has sold more than
250,000 copies worldwide, and has been translated into fifteen
languages. Left To Tell has been adopted into the curriculum of
dozens of high schools and universities, including Villanova University,
which selected it for the 2007-2008 “One Book Program,” making
it mandatory reading for 6,000 students. It has also been featured
on 60 Minutes, BET, CNN and in the New York Times. In 2006, Immaculee
was named one of Beliefnet. com’s “Most Inspiring People
of the Year,” and is a recipient of the American Legacy’s
Women of Strength and Courage Award. Four years after the genocide,
Immaculee immigrated to the United States and began working for
the United Nations, establishing the Left to Tell Charitable Fund
to help orphaned children in Africa.

and staff are also invited to participate in a 30-hour fast to
encourage a sense of solidarity with those who are suffering from
hunger. Collection bowls will be placed in the cafeteria during
lunch for students to offer the money they would normally spend
on their food to the impoverished and drought-stricken people of
Africa. Students, faculty, and staff who cannot or choose not to
fast will be asked to at least cut down on their normal intake
of food and donate the rest of their normal cost for lunch. For
more information about the organization through which the funds

Band News
On Saturday, March 15, the Bishop Dunne Drumline joined the Dallas
Fire Department and led the Kessler Park United Methodist Church
Annual Easter Parade. Spectators applauded the band, and the students
received an automatic invitation to return next year!
That same evening, the Drumline competed in the
Desoto High School Step Team/Drumline Competition. Competition
was stiff, but the Bishop Dunne Drumline displayed the discipline,
precision, and technical ability in performing both new and old
cadences. The Drumline won first place, defeating current champions,
Kimball High School, by nine points. Bishop Dunne was previously
ranked number five in the Dallas Fort Worth region, with schools
such as Kimball, Townview, Carter, and Skyline, ranked ahead of
us, and we are looking forward to the new rankings. Representatives
from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Prairie View A&M,
and Langston University were at the event, and have discussed band
scholarships to the Bishop Dunne Drumline members.

Junior
Ring Ceremony
The junior class invites their parents to celebrate their Ring
Mass on Tuesday, April 8, at 9:15 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary
Church. The Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Dugan, who will
also bless the rings. The students will then be presented their

a class ring, he or she can substitute another piece of jewelry
in its place. This information was given to the members of the
junior class during a recent class meeting. The Mass will be followed
by a reception for the juniors and their parents in the cafeteria
back at school. Looking ahead: The junior overnight retreat is
Monday and Tuesday, May 19 and 20, 2008.
College
Counseling News
We would like to remind juniors that if they are planning on applying
to some of the more selective colleges and universities in this
country that applications are due in less than a year. Consequently,
there is much to do. Hopefully, all juniors have taken the SAT
or ACT at least once this year or plan on taking it before the
school year is over. It is very important to take those tests in
the junior year of high school, as this is the last semester to
make a good impression on the colleges. When seniors apply in the
fall, the colleges will only see grades on transcripts from ninth
through eleventh grade. Juniors need to spend time this summer
brushing up on essay writing skills, visiting college campuses,
researching scholarship opportunities, taking the SAT or ACT again,
building resumes and narrowing down lists of possible schools.
The senior year is exciting and full of great times but can also
be very stressful. By spending this summer completing many of the
college admissions tasks, next year will be easier. Juniors need
to see Mrs. Brown as soon as possible about their plans.
