Donations Title

Bishop Dunne Catholic School will host the eighth annual Bishop Dunne 100 Dinner on October 29, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hilton Anatole Hotel.  The purpose of this dinner is to provide tuition assistance for students in financial need who would otherwise be unable to attend Bishop Dunne.

Bishop Dunne is blessed with an harmonious multicultural diversity of students with 36% African – American; 34% Hispanic; 25% Caucasian;  4% biracial and 2% Asian.  With a current enrollment of 685 students for the 2008 – 2009 school year, 315 students will receive some form of aid amounting to over $900,000.  In actuality, every student receives financial aid, as the tuition does not cover the cost of education.  The difference is subsidized by grants and donations.

Honorary Chairpersons

The school is pleased to announce that the Honorary Chairpersons for this event are Bill and Kasey Hollon. The Hollons have been married for 33 years, and, claim as their greatest achievements their three children and three grandchildren.  Kasey graduated from SMU with a Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees, and Bill graduated from the University of Texas with a journalism degree and furthered his education at Texas A & M with a Master of Science degree.  Kasey and Bill are both former educators. Kasey retired from the Richardson ISD as the English Department Chair after serving ten years in the classroom.  Bill retired in 1980 from the Dallas County Community College District as District Director of Program Development.  Currently, the Hollons operate their family owned business, Pasco, which designs and supplies commercial kitchen equipment to school districts, universities, healthcare organizations, retirement systems and restaurants.  Kasey and Bill Hollon see Bishop Dunne as a “beacon” in the southern sector of the Dallas community and a place that meets the needs of young men and women, both Catholic and non-Catholic, who strive for excellence in education.  Bishop Dunne, they believe, also serves as a strong foundation that supports the highest moral and ethical values which are grounded in the teachings of Christ.  Kasey and Bill go on to say that “despite the economic challenges the Bishop Dunne Family continues to grow, nurtured under the direction of Principal, Kate Dailey and her staff”.  The Hollons state that, “They have joyfully become part of the Dunne family.”

Keynote Speaker

Giving the keynote address that evening is Sister Gloria Cain, S.S.N.D., the newly appointed Superintendent of the Catholic School System for the Diocese of Dallas.  As a School Sister of Notre Dame, she has taught at all levels of Catholic education from elementary grades through to the college level.  Sister Gloria earned a Bachelor of Arts from Notre Dame College, St. Louis, Missouri, in political science and history.  She received a Master of Education from Our Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, Texas, with concentrations in school administration and supervision.  Sister Gloria taught in Catholic schools in Texas, New Mexico, and Louisiana.  She was the principal of a Catholic elementary school for eleven years before becoming the first superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Lake Charles, a position she held for thirteen years before becoming the first superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Victoria in Texas.  Sister Gloria served two terms on the Texas Catholic Conference Accreditation Commission and is currently active in a number of professional education organizations.  Sister also serves in several capacities for her religious congregation, the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Voyager Award Recipient

At the Dinner, the Voyager Award will be presented to the Alliance for Catholic Education Program from the University of Notre Dame.  Accepting this award is its founder, Father Timothy Scully, C.S.C.  Ordained a Holy Cross priest in 1981, he served his first years of priesthood in Santiago, Chile. He earned Master's and Doctoral degrees in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, after graduating summa cum laude from Notre Dame in 1976, and receiving his Master of Divinity degree in 1979.   Father Scully, C.S.C. is a professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame, a Fellow of the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies, and is currently serving as Director of Notre Dame's Institute for Educational Initiatives, where he oversees the work of the Alliance for Catholic Education, the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity, and other education-related programs.  In 1993, Father Scully founded the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE), Notre Dame's signature program which provides hundreds of Catholic school teachers to scores of underserved communities across the United States, as well as in Ireland and Chile.  In 2006 he chaired the year-long, national task force to study the future of Catholic education in the United States.  Father Scully presented the final report, entitled: Making God Known, Loved, and Served, The Future of Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in the United States, to the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops in January of 2007, and is now in the midst of launching 12 new initiatives outlined in the report aimed at sustaining and strengthening Catholic schools nationally.  Father Scully has received numerous awards for his work in education.

The Master of Ceremonies will be Craig Miller, a graduate of Bishop Dunne and morning host of Dunham and Miller Show on SportsRadio, 1310 The Ticket.  The Bishop Dunne 100 Dinner Chairpersons are Oliver McGonigle, Lou Munin, and Ken Reiser.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the friends of Bishop Dunne who have helped us survive and grow over the last few years. We could not have made it through the many challenges that were encountered without your significant assistance. The school and its students are extremely grateful for your involvement and support.

And now another year presents new challenges and opportunities. Our student-body continues to grow in response to the needs of the community and the achievements and recruiting efforts of the school. And with this growth in enrollment, Bishop Dunne faces the need for additional resources to fund its several tuition assistance programs. The upcoming Bishop Dunne 100 Dinner is planned to be a major source in supplying these fundraising needs.

Please join Bishop Dunne in this most worthy and urgent cause. Your participation in our Bishop Dunne 100 Dinner will help the school to continue pursuing its mission of educating and developing an increasing number of the youth of Dallas. We need your support and we thank you for your consideration and generosity.

Sincerely,

Kate Dailey, Principal
